If you’re like many people, you need your vehicle to last you for several years. If your engine has given up and you don’t want to purchase another vehicle, an engine rebuild could be a great alternative. It’s less expensive than purchasing a new engine or taking a chance on a used replacement engine.

Even though time and money may be tight, the benefit of routine engine service is worth the extra cost and effort. If neglected, your vehicle will start to develop problems just from normal mileage wear and tear, poor maintenance, lubrication problems, or excessive overheating. You could find yourself paying out a lot more for a major engine repair down the road.

Some of the symptoms of problems you will want to watch out for are:

  • smoke from the tailpipe;
  • excessive oil consumption;
  • knocking or tapping sounds;
  • low oil pressure;
  • low compression;
  • water mixing in oil;
  • oil getting into the air cleaner and/or radiator.

What does an engine rebuild consist of? The engine must first be removed from the car. Then, it could include one or more, if not all, of the following issues:

  • The rings and values are replaced,
  • The worn cylinder walls are bored to meet engine specifications,
  • The head is rebuilt,
  • Worn pistons are replaced,
  • New timing components are installed,
  • Replacing the rod and main bearings, and
  • Replacing the freeze plugs.

If your engine quits entirely, you don’t have to purchase a new car or even a brand new engine. First consider an engine rebuild, especially if your vehicle is still in good overall condition and is otherwise mechanically sound.
