Heights Car Care

1320 Main Street #1
Billings, MT 59105

It’s a fact that many auto shops see cars brought in that may not have been serviced as frequently as they should have been at the appropriate intervals. With many people heading out for summer road trips, this is a scary thought. Do you remember the last time you visited your auto center for an oil change or tune up? It’s easy to forget these services until you start to experience car problems.

Here are seven warning signs of commonly seen problems that you should be aware of:

  • Dashboard warning lights. Your car's onboard diagnostic system keeps your vehicle operating efficiently. If these warnings lights start flashing, take your vehicle into your auto shop for a diagnostic test as soon as you are able.
  • Oil spots under the car. Dark brown oil spots indicate leaking motor oil. It could simply be the filter or drain plug not secured tightly or it could be a compromised gasket.
  • Greenish fluid under the car. This means radiator fluid is leaking, either from a bad fitting on a hose or a cracked radiator. Don’t risk an overheating engine and engine damage, but take your vehicle to your auto center as soon as possible.
  • Noisy Brakes. A high-pitch squeal or squeak from your brakes indicates that the pads are worn out. Squealing, squeaking, or metal-on-metal grinding sounds can also indicate that rotors, calipers, and discs have become worn out.
  • Rumbling or sputtering from underneath the car. This usually indicates a problem with the exhaust system, such as a hole in the muffler or possibly a failing catalytic converter.
  • Chirping or screeching from under the hood. Drive belts, also known as serpentine belts, direct engine power to accessory systems. As these belts wear, they become frayed and brittle. Make sure they are replaced as recommended to prevent a broken belt out on the road.
  • Humming, growling or roaring tires. Your tires may be out-of-round, the tread is worn down, or a bad wheel bearing.

Remember: Don’t head out on the road if your vehicle is showing any of the above signs of problems. Schedule an inspection at your auto center before your summer road trip to make sure you are driving as safe as possible.
