It’s true that seemingly unnecessary vehicle maintenance items can be expensive. Other than insurance and fuel, a lot of people are not able to put aside a certain amount each month out of their budget to spend on their cars. However, if you want to actually save money, you will have to spend a little on regular vehicle maintenance items.

Why is car maintenance so expensive?

  1. Replacement Car parts – the cost of car parts depends largely on who makes them and where they come from.
  2. New Tires – advanced technology means that tires will last longer, but the prices are still high for good quality tires.
  3. Brake Pads and Rotors – don’t wait until your brake pads are so that it causes damage to the rotors, making the cost of a brake job more expensive.
  4. Replacement Fluid Costs – though the cost is relatively low for oil changes, it should be done about every three to six months. Coolant and brake fluid will also need to be changed from time to time. Otherwise, you could be paying out a lot more on repairs caused by damage to the engine or transmission.
  5. Safety Systems – new features such as blind-spot monitoring or lane changing sensors add to the price of the car, plus to the cost of any needed repair.
  6. New Technology – Features such as touch screens and auto braking also adds to the price of the car and the cost of maintenance.
  7. New Materials being used – Cars are now being made out of materials that make them more fuel-efficient but cost more, such as using aluminum instead of steel.
  8. Bodywork and paint jobs – If you want your car to look good, you may have to end up having bodywork, such as fixing a bent fender or re-painting a panel.
