When did you last replace your tires? If it has been several years, plus several thousands of miles, you may find yourself visiting your auto shop more frequently than usual for urgent tire repair. To maintain the safety of your vehicle plus providing you with a smoother ride, you may be due for new tires.

But you may be wondering just when tires should be replaced? It can be a daunting thought when it comes to knowing what kind of tire to put on your vehicle. You have probably heard it said many times—read your owner’s manual. It states the specific size and tread type that is recommended for your vehicle. Of course, the tire repair specialists at your auto shop will also be able to advise you about how to choose the right tire for your vehicle.

There are two methods for determining if it’s time to replace your old tires:

  • The Penny Test – Insert a U.S. penny into the tread of your tires in several different spots about 15 inches apart as the tread wears unevenly. If you can see Lincoln’s head in most of the spots, it’s time to replace your tires.
  • Built-in Wear Bars  These bars should not be visible through the tread. If these bars are flush with the outside of the tread, it’s time to replace your tires.

To help alleviate some of your fears about choosing tires, here are a few issues to consider:

  • Determine the correct wheel size. Look in your owner’s manual and on the information sticker on the driver’s door frame.
  • Purchase all four tires as a matching set. This provides the best level of safety and ensures a smoother ride.
  • Check the condition of the spare. The spare tire should match the new tires.
  • Correct alignment and tire balancing. After your new tires are installed, the alignment should be adjusted and the tires balanced correctly. This will help prevent uneven tread wear while increasing driving safety.
  • Break-in new tires gently. Don’t drive aggressively, but easy driving will ensure your new tires start to wear properly while making sure that the alignment and suspension are in good condition.
