Transmission service should be part of your basic vehicle maintenance routine, just like changing the oil and filter or rotating the tires. This will help ensure that your vehicle will run smoothly and efficiently, keeping all components properly lubricated and in good working condition. By having a general inspection and replacement of the transmission fluid, filter and gasket periodically, minor transmission problems can be taken care of before they get bigger and more costly to fix.

What does transmission service include, you ask?

  • Replace Pan Gasket – The pan gasket (located around the rim of the transmission pan) can get worn and cracked, leading to transmission fluid leaks. The gasket is easy to replace and is relatively inexpensive. If the current gasket is reusable (not damaged), it may be possible to simply clean it and then put it back.
  • Clean and Remove Grime – All components of the transmission, which includes the transmission pan, gasket, sealing surface, and transmission case, should be wiped free of the sludge or debris that collects over time.
  • Replace Transmission Filter – Clogged or dirty transmission filters cause excessive stress and wear on a transmission. An easy and inexpensive service, it’s important to replace this filter.
  • Flush or Change Transmission Fluid – Transmission gears deliver power from the engine to the drive wheels, shifting automatically to provide the best power and efficiency for your driving speed. Transmission fluid cools and lubricates these gears. Over time, this fluid deteriorates and loses its effectiveness. Keeping clean and fresh fluid in the transmission can help prevent premature wear and damage to the transmission.

Remember: To keep your transmission working better and longer, a full transmission service should be performed about every 30,000 miles, or every couple of years, whichever comes first.
