There are many people who purchase used vehicles over new ones. Buying a new car takes a lot of the guesswork and unknowns about a vehicles’ history out of the process. However, when purchasing a used vehicle there are several things you want to discover before the purchase is finalized.

4 Questions to Ask your Mechanic When Buying a Used Car:

  1. What is the car’s owner history? This will tell you a lot about a car. Find out where the vehicle was originally purchased, how many previous owners and where they lived, where the vehicle was serviced, and whether or not the vehicle was for personal use, or for rental, fleet or lease use.
  2. What are the car’s mileage and service records? This is probably one of the most important facts about a used vehicle. If a vehicle has more than average mileage, typically around 15,000 per year, then you can suspect that a lot of car maintenance would have been required to keep it in the optimum operating condition. Learning about the service history will tell you specifically what types of service was performed and the location of the service.
  3. Has the car had any recalls from the manufacturer and were they completed by the dealer? It is not unusual for automobiles to have factory recalls to service or correct manufacturer defects. The law requires that dealerships contact vehicle owners and inform them of any recalls and arrange to have them corrected at no expense to the owner. If these corrections were not done, the vehicle could be unsafe to drive or potentially have more frequent required service on faulty components.
  4. Has the vehicle been in a collision? This is a critical piece of information that you will want to know; how serious the accident was and what was done to repair it. If a vehicle accident was reported to the police, they are required to report it to the local DMV. This record is attached to the vehicle’s registration and title to any person purchasing the vehicle will know about the accident.

If you are searching for a good used vehicle, ask your mechanic to help you find out all you can about the one you are considering. Answers to the above questions will serve you well in this search.
