If you’ve already handled the spring cleaning for your house and garden, it’s time to think of your automobile! Why is it important to schedule a tune up for your car? Your engine will be inspected, the overall performance of your vehicle will be analyzed, and adjustments in the operating systems will be made as needed. In other words, your vehicle will be ready to face the warm days of summer ahead.

How often should you get a car tune up, you wonder? Although your owner’s manual will give recommendations for certain issues to be covered in a tune up service, there really isn’t a one-size-fits-all procedure. Based on the age of your vehicle, the number of miles on the speedometer, and maintenance history, your mechanic will customize a tune up uniquely fit for your vehicle.

The tune up checklist should include both engine assessment and preventative maintenance as determined by your mechanic. Here are some of the items that should be included in a basic car tune up:

  • Spark plugs—
    1. An engine in good condition should have spark plugs with a light tan or gray insulator firing noses.
    2. Test the color of the spark and if it is properly igniting the fuel.
    3. The wires should be pliable without any cracks.
  • Fuel pump and filter—The pump should be functioning properly and that the filter isn’t clogged or dirty.
  • Fuel injectors—There should be no dirt or other deposits restricting the amount of fuel delivered to the engine and no buildup affecting the spark plugs.
  • Engine timing and idle should be adjusted as necessary.
  • PCV valve—should not be clogged or with leaks.
  • Points and condenser—they should be clean and operating efficiently.
