Are you worried about how often should brakes be replaced? If this is the case, more than likely you may be noticing braking problems and are wondering what a brake repair involves. There really is not a clear-cut schedule as to when to replace the various components of the brake system, although many mechanics may recommend a brake replacement at about every 35,000 to 50,000 miles.

So how often should brakes be replaced? The answer to this question will depend on the factors described below:

  • Where you drive – How many miles and the type of miles you drive, such as stop-and-go, mountainous, or flat stretches of a highway determines how much you have to engage your brakes while driving.
  • Weight of your vehicle – How heavy is your vehicle including passengers and cargo in the trunk? If overloaded, you will have to apply the brakes harder to come to a stop.
  • Quality of the brake materials – If you purchase the cheapest pads and rotors that are available, they will not last as long as higher-quality parts.
  • Use of your vehicle – Towing recreational vehicles, boats, or carrying heavy loads means you will be using your brakes harder and more often.

What are some signs that it’s time for brake repair? Listen for squeaking, squealing, or metal-on-metal grinding when you apply the brakes. Many of the newer cars have built-in wear sensors that scrape against a brake disc when the pads needed replacing. Some vehicles incorporate electronic wear indicators that alert the driver with a dashboard warning light if the pads reach the minimum thickness or if the level of brake fluid is too low.

A word of advice: Make it a practice to have your brakes inspected at every tire rotation service (about every six months) to check the thickness of the pads and the condition of the rotors and calipers. Oftentimes, a visual inspection is the best way to determine the amount of life left in your brakes!
