In days past, the typical answer to this question would have been that you need to get oil changes every 3,000 miles or every three months, whichever came first. However, with the advances in automotive technology and synthetic oils, the mileage interval between oil changes has significantly increased.

So how many miles can you really go with an oil change? First, find out what your car actually needs. This will save you time and money spent on unnecessary oil changes or on the wrong kind of oil.

There are two ways to know when your car needs an oil change:

  1. Read your vehicle owner’s manual. The schedule of maintenance services listed in your owner’s manual will tell you how many miles or how much time you can allow between oil changes. It’s is highly recommended that the oil filter is also replaced at every oil change. Or ask your mechanic as to what type of oil is best and what the appropriate mileage interval should be for your vehicle.
  2. Service reminder light. You will see a “change oil soon” light illuminate (or an icon of a wrench or some other symbol) illuminate on your instrument panel. This generally means it’s time to schedule an oil change.

Many of today’s new cars are equipped with built-in computers that include an “oil life monitoring system.” This computer calculates when you need an oil change based on recorded information such as how long you drive and the engine’s operating conditions. Your owner’s manual will state whether your car has an oil life monitoring system.

Remember: It is important to keep up with regular oil changes! It is the most cost-effective maintenance item needed to keep your vehicle operating at its peak performance level.
