When it comes to tires, many of us usually just jump in our car and take off without giving a thought to the condition of our tires. All of a sudden, you may find that you are looking for an urgent tire repair because of an unexpected flat tire. Worse yet, the chances of an accident increase if you are driving with bad tires. It is crucial to keep up with regular tire service, such as tire rotations, checking the inflation pressure and tread depth, and maintaining the correct wheel alignment and tire balance.

So how do you know when tires need to be replaced? You may start to notice one or more of the following problems:

  • Noisy Tires – Humming or thumping sounds (intensity changes with speed) can be caused by driving with tires that are unevenly worn due to neglecting regular tire rotations, or failing suspension, or locking brakes.
  • Wobbling – If the internal belts in the tire separate, the pressurized air presses against the tread, forming a bubble, causing “wobbling,” but is usually only felt at low speeds. You may feel the car bounce around or the steering wheel move.
  • Tread Depth – Check tread depth regularly (every time the tires are rotated). If it falls below 2/32”, you should replace your tires.
  • Poor Traction – When the tread gets too low, the tire cannot grip the road and the slightest movement in steering or an unexpected bump will cause your car to start sliding. This is especially hazardous on wet or icy roads where there is little or no traction at all.
  • Defective Tire – A defective tire that cannot be balanced may vibrate constantly. This is not only annoying but also unsafe.

What should you do if you notice any of the problems above? Reduce your speed and pull off the road as soon as you can safely do so. If you can, replace the damaged tire with the spare and then get to your tire repair shop as soon as possible. Or, you may need to call a tow truck if the spare doesn’t fix the problem.

Please remember that a tire repair only lasts so long before it gives out. It may be time for a new set of tires so that you are driving as safe as possible, especially as we face the harsh winter months ahead.
