Are you noticing shifting problems? Do you know the signs of a bad transmission? It seems that unless a driver is experiencing shifting problems, a transmission fluid change probably never comes to mind.

Just what is the purpose of transmission fluid? The transmission fluid is a viscous fluid that transmits power from the engine to the transmission as well as acting as a coolant. It does, however, deteriorate over time as it becomes contaminated with worn particles from the transmission. Letting your car run low on transmission fluid can cause shifting problems—from jerking to not shifting at all.

When do you need a transmission fluid change?

For automatic transmissions: A transmission fluid change for automatics can vary from every 30,000 miles to possibly never.

Manual transmissions: Most manuals need a transmission fluid change between every 30,000 to 60,000 miles.

Transmission fluid becomes contaminated over time as the synchronizers, bearings, and gears in the transmission wear out, resulting in metal particles floating around. It then starts to become ineffective as the dirty fluid does not lubricate as well as clean fluid. A transmission fluid change will drain out these contaminants, extending the life of your transmission.

Tip to remember: Don’t forget to have the transmission fluid level checked periodically between services. This will help maintain the investment you have made in your vehicle and give you many miles of reliable transportation.
