The oil change is one of the essential ways to keep your vehicle in good operating condition. Unfortunately, auto shops report that they see vehicles with damaged or dirty engines because their owners didn’t know what oil to use or waited too long between oil changes.

Most vehicle owners know that synthetic oils typically perform better than conventional oils in providing protection for your vehicle, but they probably don’t know why. What’s the difference between synthetic oil and regular oil?

Both conventional and synthetic oils begin in the ground. That’s where the similarity ends. Synthetic oil is not only refined but also distilled, purified and broken down into its basic molecules. This process not only removes more impurities from the crude oil but also enables individual molecules in the oil to be tailored to the demands of modern engines. These customized molecules provide higher levels of protection and performance than conventional oils.

Here are the major differences between synthetic oil and regular oil:

  1. Keeps your engine cleaner -- Conventional oils can sometimes form sludge, reducing your engine's efficiency and, ultimately, reducing the life of your engine. Synthetic oils contain fewer impurities and can better resist the formation of sludge.
  2. Better engine protection -- Engine parts are in constant contact with each other, moving at high speeds. Motor oil is the protective barrier between these components. As regular oils break down, their ability to prevent engine wear diminishes. Synthetic oils retain their wear protection properties for a much longer time, increasing engine life
  3. Flows better in low temperatures -- When your car sits for awhile, (overnight or a day or two) the oil settles. When you start the car, the oil begins flowing through the engine to protect against friction. With conventional oil, it takes more time until it is able to flow smoothly, especially during cold winter months. Synthetic oils are engineered to flow quickly even at low temperatures so they start protecting your engine as soon as the ignition is turned on.
  4. Protects better at high temperatures -- Over time, the high temperatures created in your engine can cause conventional motor oils to break down or evaporate, exposing your engine to wear. Synthetics are engineered to resist these high temperatures, especially important if you do a lot of driving in hot climates.

Ask your mechanic for more information about the differences between synthetic oil and regular oil so that you can choose the best oil for your vehicle.
