Winter is here to stay for a while. If you haven’t done so already, be sure to have any needed auto repair taken care of so that you are driving as safely as possible in wintry road conditions. Spending a little time and money at your auto repair shop can potentially save you hundreds of dollars in preventing costly auto repair and could also be a lifesaver on a cold winter’s day.

Here are five important auto repair issues to make sure your vehicle is as safe as possible to drive:

  1. Oil Change and Other Fluids – Clean oil keeps your engine lubricated so it won’t overheat (yes, even in winter). Along with the oil change, replace the oil filter with as high a quality as you can afford. Refresh and change filters as necessary for the other fluids (such as the coolant, brake fluid, and transmission fluid).
  2. Brakes – Check the condition of the brake rotors, pads, and calipers. Pads too thin or warped or cracked rotors could be the cause of an accident because of failing brakes!
  3. Lights – Make sure all the lights (both exterior and interior) are working properly. Bulbs are fairly inexpensive and easily replaced.
  4. Windshield and Wipers – Windshield wipers that are in good condition together with a full washer fluid reservoir will make sure you are ready for heavy winter rain or snow. If there are any chips or cracks in the windshield, have it repaired or replaced so that the safety of your passenger cabin is not compromised.
  5. Tire Service – Keep the proper inflation pressure in your tires, schedule regular tire rotations, and make sure the wheel alignment is good and that tires are balanced. This will help ensure that your vehicle stays in contact with the road. The spare should also be in good condition in case of an unexpected flat tire.
